Condition and sizing

Condition: Loved — A faint mark is visible on the upper back, and the Carling sponsor print shows cracking and wear consistent with age.

We have not measured this particular shirt yet. Vintage sizing moved a lot between seasons and makers, so treat the size on the label as a starting point and the guide below as a general one.

Looking after your shirt

Wash it cold, at 30°C or less, inside out, on a gentle cycle or by hand, and never with bleach. Heat is what cracks a print and a sponsor, so keep it out of the tumble dryer and never put an iron on the lettering.

Dry it flat or on a hanger, out of direct sun. Store it on a hanger or folded flat, away from sunlight, and it will outlast most things in your wardrobe.

Buying a vintage football shirt: your questions

How do I know a shirt is what you say it is?

The photographs on a listing are of that shirt, not a stock image. Where a shirt has been graded, the listing gives its condition grade and names the faults we have found; where it has not been graded yet, the page says so rather than leaving a blank. If a shirt you bought from us turns out not to be what we said it was, send it back whenever you find out and we refund the full price you paid and your return postage. The promise is set out in our terms of sale.

What do your condition grades mean?

Shirts are graded on a six-point scale — New, Deadstock, Excellent, Very Good, Good and Loved — and the page shows the grade with its sentence. New is brand new with its original tags. Deadstock has never been worn and still has its original tags, as it was sold in store when it was released. Excellent and Very Good have no obvious faults in appearance and may have been worn just a few times. Good has minor stains or fabric tearing which may be noticeable. Loved is used, with noticeable stains or fabric tearing. Read that sentence with the photographs, which are always of the shirt you will get.

How do I get the size right on a 1990s shirt?

Do not go by the label alone. Sizing has changed since the 1990s, and a 1990s XL is often closer to a modern L. If you want to be sure about a particular shirt before you buy, email us and we will look at it and tell you how it comes up. For an exact pit to pit or length, tap hello@forever-vintage.co.uk. Your email opens with the message already written; just press send.

How much is delivery, and how long does it take?

UK delivery is free on orders over £60 — or over £67 if you are using a discount code, because the threshold is applied to your total after the discount. Under that it is worked out at checkout from the courier's live price for your address and your parcel, and you see the exact charge and the full total before you pay. Order before 3pm on a working day and your shirt is dispatched that day; orders placed after 3pm, at a weekend, or on a Scottish bank holiday are dispatched on the next working day. UK delivery then usually takes a further two to five working days. We email a tracking number when the parcel leaves us. Full detail is on our delivery and returns page.

Can I return a shirt if it is not right?

Yes. You have 30 days from delivery to change your mind, sale items included. Email hello@forever-vintage.co.uk and we send you a prepaid label, so the return postage is on us, then post it within 14 days of telling us. We refund the full price and the standard delivery you paid, to the way you paid, within 14 days of it reaching us. Returns go to Forever Vintage Returns, 145 Pitt Street, Edinburgh EH6 4DE — please use the label we send you rather than posting it yourself. Every shirt is one of one, so we cannot swap one for another: return it and order the one you want. The refund policy has the detail.
